Bruegger's Bagels - Bringing New York City Authenticity to Syracuse

akim440

When in New York, one should expect authentic, delicious New York-style bagels. Here in Syracuse, nobody makes more authentic and easily accessible New York style bagels than Bruegger’s Bagels.

Bruegger’s Bagels refined baking method includes kettle-cooking their bagels and then baking them in an authentic stone hearth oven. This advanced method was initially perfected in 1983 at the original Bruegger’s Bagels location in Troy, New York and has continued to be passed on to each of their approximate 260 bakeries nationwide. Additionally, while many bakeries claim to bake their bagels from scratch daily, Bruegger’s Bagels has taken this a step further. Their practice of baking multiple smaller batches of bagels throughout the day ensures that their product has optimum freshness and quality.

Following a recurring baking cycle has enabled Bruegger’s Bagels to develop a wide assortment of bagel flavors. While new flavors are constantly being created to coincide with holiday seasonality, Bruegger’s Bagels maintains a minimum of 16 diverse bagel flavors, ranging from $1 to $2, throughout the year. From Cheesy Hashbrown to Cinnamon Sugar to Rosemary Olive Oil, Bruegger’s Bagels has an enticing bagel flavor for any specific pallet.

The bagel-making process is not the only unique practice of Bruegger’s Bagels that sets them apart from the competition. While whey is a milk component that is typically removed when making cream cheese, Bruegger's Bagels uses whey to give their schmears a thicker consistency and tastier complexion. All 11 cream cheese flavors presented on their menu contain whey, including their signature Sriracha Honey, Bacon Scallion and Smoked Salmon flavors.

While product quality and consistency may be a concern when dining at corporate chains, all of Bruegger’s Bagels dairy products are naturally harvested from a local dairy farm in Vermont, located only 10 miles from their main manufacturing and distribution facility. Bruegger’s Bagels also contracts local fishermen and cattle farms dedicated to their product’s quality to supply them with their vast selections of meats. These recurring contracts allow Bruegger’s Bagels to offer various delicious sandwiches, such as their farm-inspired Farmhouse breakfast sandwich and their Hot Pastrami signature lunch sandwich.

The Syracuse University (@syracuseu) dining centers are known to be especially underwhelming and inconvenient to students. Besides the fluctuating quality of the food produced, these dining halls are only open daily from 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m. While the Schine Student Center has varying hours that depend on the eatery one plans to visit, this dining option requires an alternative form of payment other than a typical meal swipe. It also poses a potentially long trek for students, which might want to be avoided during the early hours of the morning. Enter Bruegger’s Bagels, which operates seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. During this time, Bruegger’s Bagels is available to order, whether you walk in, carry out or order delivery on Grubhub or DoorDash. With two Syracuse locations, the closest being less than two miles from campus, Bruegger’s Bagels is a quick and affordable dining option for any hungry student in search of a meal prior to the opening of Syracuse University dining centers. Whether you couldn't sleep, wake up early to do work or are simply an early riser, Bruegger’s Bagels provides authentic New York style bagels and sandwiches that all Syracuse University students should try.

My next blog post will feature D.P. Dough, as I transition from premier breakfast eateries to the best late-night dining options around Syracuse University.
